The National 2009 Critique

It gave me a lot of pleasure to judge a good quality entry (76 dogs, 14 absentees) of this wonderful breed. They have such an aura of calmness and gentle dignity about them, that it makes you feel tranquil just being in their company. I find it difficult not to think about all the marvellous old ladies that have made this breed famous when looking at a class and trying to compare old pictures in my mind with present day stock. Overall I felt the bitches in today’s entry were stronger and more even in quality than the dogs. Feet in many were not compact or well knuckled.

PD(1) 1 & BP Adams’ Ardneish Lohengrin. 11-month quality puppy with good head and expression, firm body, deep chest, good reach of neck, lovely coat, went quite well when he concentrated, still a bit untidy in front action, charming personality, good potential. JD(5,1) 1 Barret’s Stranwith Ebenezer. Nearly 18-months, typical male with good length of stride, could be firmer behind going away, attractive head, clean outline with good depth of body, well conditioned and handled, harsh jacket. 2 Grimshaw’s Jamalison Winter Blizzard. 17 ? months, standing a little slack in feet, excellent coat texture, in hard muscular condition, good length of head, lovely eyes, not quite holding his topline on the move, sired by BOB. 3 Spencer andRhodes’ Gentom Renown.

PGD(7,2) 1 Peach’s Kilbourne Fire Chief. 2-years, sound, workmanlike young dog in excellent condition and muscletone, pleasing head, clean neckline, deep chest, strong hindquarters, plenty of drive when moving, shaggy coat. 2 Taylor’s Kilbourne James Dene. 21-months, masculine head, excellent feet, good outline, in lean condition, very well handled, close decision. 3 Hawkins’ Kwaricott Asclepius.

LD(8,2) Difficult class, a bit mixed. 1 RCC Helps’ Greyfriars Gille of Beardswood. 3-years, handsome dog in good form, well proportioned, easy mover with a good stride, excellent coat texture and bone, I liked his head, dark kind eyes, gave the CC winner a good run, sire of the two gorgeous minor puppy girls. 2 Barter’s Brutus Fraxinus of Ehlaradawn. 3 ? years, attractive head, lean and fit, moved and showed okay but a bit of a fidget standing, a little slack in feet. 3 Trotman andDockree’s Regalflight Prince Quillo of Penherald.

OD(7) Good class. 1, CC & BOB, Peach andPhillips’ Wild West Von Der Oelmuhle. 4-years, well balanced and proportioned, quality head, good reach of neck, strong body and quarters, harsh jacket, fit and well muscled, sound active mover, expertly handled, calm, steady showman. 2 Day’s Demerlay Dorian Grey at Celticmoon. Nearly 5, happy and co-operative showman of good size and type, has much to like about him, good bone and body, tendency to ring tail on the move and not 100% in front today. 3 Rhodes and Morton’s Ch Gentom Peacemaker. Completed a quality trio, handler fell going round which unfortunately unsettled the dog for the rest of the time.

MPB(1) 1 Helps’ Rosslyn Pippa. 7-months, pure delight, lovely eyes, taking it all very seriously, good neck, coat texture, bone and feet, for such a baby she went quite well, although not 100% co-ordinated as yet, promising.

PB (4) 1 Trotman’s Stainlonan Kulang of Penherald. 10-months, shapely puppy with feminine head, good reach of neck, excellent quarters, moved well behind, just a little careless in front action, sympathetically handled, good coat. 2 Helps’ Rosslyn Pollie. 7-months, litter sister to MPBwinner and further forward in movement, made a perfect brace, lovely face, good outline, flat bone, long tail, gorgeous baby. 3 Platt’s Charbonnel Fliss. When the class started and they went round the ring, she was my winner, but something put her off and she just wouldn’t settle to stand or move properly, pity. Good shape, well coated and bodied.

JB(8,3) 1 Peach’s Kilbourne Teine. 16-months, excellent flow in movement, fit looking youngster with well muscled quarters, good depth of body and reach of neck, well fitting jacket, well handled. 2 Owen andBrodie’s Wolfcastle Efa. 14-months, feminine head and outlook, excellent coat texture, clean and well presented, good neckline, looked well going round but a shade close going away. 3 Grimshaw’s Jamalison Winter Gayle.

PGB(13,3) Big class which gave me plenty to think about, it was quite warm in the sun and I took too long with the result that a couple that I liked switched off and got fed up. 1 Janson’s Nixophel Crystal Amethyst JW ShCM. Quality hound with harsh coat, excellent bone and depth of body, well laid shoulders, used her neck to best advantage, pleasing head, kind expression, moved well and kept going to the end. 2 Quinn andO’Brien’s Kilbourne Fire Crest. 2 years 5 months, big girl in good form, excellent coat and body, moved with plenty of drive, just lost out at the crucial moment by not holding her topline. 3 Peach’s Brackenalnd Waltz.

LB(7,2) 1 Reynolds’ Wickwar White Lace. 4-years, typy quality bitch with good outline and coat texture, feminine head, expressive eyes, neat well carried ears, deep chest, moved well, showmanship could have been a little more animated. 2 Phillips’ Ladygrove Belle Starr. Nearly two, expertly handled to look her best, excellent side gait, good length of head, well coated and conditioned, another sired by my BOB. 3 Grimshaw’s Jamalison Melody.

OB(11,3) What a lovely class to finish the day, lots of quality. 1 CC Bailey’s Ch Greyflax Waterloo Sunset. 4 ? years, lovely girl and the one today who stepped up the pace on the move, standing and moving over a lot of ground, well proportioned, typical head, correct tail carriage, ample bone and depth of body, harsh coat. Apparently I gave her a RCC when still a junior. 2 RCC Owen andBrodie’s Ch Marandike Ebony’s Choice To Wolfscastle. Most attractive young lady of 2 ? , splendid coat and condition, well balanced, well arched loin, quality head, good expression, fit and well muscled, easy mover, not quite the power in hindquarters of first but a gorgeous bitch that I really liked, worthy champion, as was three. 3 Bailey’s Ch Greyflax a King of Magic JW. A half-sister to Waterloo Sunset.
